At what speeds should i shift on a 3 speed automatice Oldsmobile Intrigue?

my car goes P R N D 1 2 3 i want to use the gears cause i find it more fun=] at which speeds should i shift the 1st gear into 2nd and the 2nd into 3rd. and also if im in 2nd gear and going say 35 and im coming to a stop light should i shift down to 1st or leave it at second. and say im coming off the highway ramp and i am going to eventually come to a complete stop should i downshift all the way back to 1 or just leave it idk help its confusing me?/!!! i use the tac meter and the sound of my engine to help but i need some spped suggestions. I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue. help|||If you feel you need to shift your self do not use the speedometer to determine when you shift, use the tachometer. If you are driving for higher speeds you will want to be near the red line on the tachometer, for normal driving you will want to up shift around 3 to 4 thousand RPM's. Also with the downshifting you do not need to do it unless you want to use the engine breaking. With an automatic the gear you are in just means the highest it will go to, not necessarily which you are in.

So when in second the transmission will use first and second automatically, when in third it will use first, second and third, and so on.

But the best option is not to shift yourself, they were only designed to do it for extreme situations. Breaks go out, towing, heavy loads, slippery roads, etc.

|||first of all it's not a 3 speed transmission... it's got overdrive... if you don't understand that you have no business selecting gears on your own.

Selecting your own gears is pointless and in your case dangerous. |||stangman is right. you don,t use automatic like a stick. just pull it down in drive and let the transmission do the shifting. if you want to change gears like that then get a manuel.|||my suggestion is: don't be stupid. auto's aren't meant to be driven like sticks, otherwise there would be no point to them. all you're going to do is break your tranny. If you want to have the fun of a straight-shift, BUY ONE.
