How many miles on a 1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette usually, until the engine goes out?
Someone is offering me a 1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette for really cheap but i dont want to spend the money to fix it if the engines about to go. I cant afford to fix the engine haha. It has a little under 215 thousand miles on it.|||That's a lot of miles. I wouldn't buy it.|||215k isn't much if the engines in good condition and been well maintained. I am SOOO surprised that one of those ugly cars are still on the road! no offence. if the engine hasn't had regular oil changes and/or has been cold reved it will only last 10-30k MAX! listen out for any clattering/tappeting in the engine when running! if it knocks it probably has "rod-knock" a term used when the rod bearings in the engine get very worn due to lots of driving in high RPM's. if it has rod knock it will only last about 30k before they completely wear out and you could "throw a rod". That's when the rod connecting from the piston to the crank shaft (crank shaft propels the wheels via the differential) comes out of its bearing and that piston will get seized up as there will be no propulsion going to it. It could also seize the entire engine if it gets tangled up in the crank shaft causing all the pistons to stop and the engine to stall. it could also have "piston slap" where the piston has wore down from cold reving and it is moving slightly from side to side and hitting the bore causing a slapping noise. with piston slap it will last about 45-50k but those will be 45-50k of uneconomical and during the last 10k of its life unreliable miles. sure, go and see it. if the engine sounds smooth with no rattles or clattering buy it indeed! just be ware of these problems!|||I'd take a rain check on that one. AT 215K miles, even if you can afford to repair the engine you may not be able to afford to repair the rest of it's components and accessories as the result of simple wear and tear. Although I had an '83 Olds Delta 88 which had 250K miles on it when I sold it and had Zero defect.|||I can't believe someone actually has one of those still on the road. that's truly amazing.
