Are 92 chevy lumina alternators and starters interchangeable with 96 oldsmobile cieras?

I just bought a alternator for my 1992 chevy lumina 3.1L and the engine went to crap.. bought a 1996 oldsmobile cierra 3100 and need to know if the alternator and starter would interchange so i don't have to scrap a brand new alternator.|||After checking the part numbers of these parts they will not interchange.Best of luck.

WHAT OTHER GM cars were similar to the Oldsmobile Omega in the mid 1970's?

WAS there ALSO a similar Chevy? The hood is 75-79 Omega only. The front bumber is Apolla 75, Omega 75-76, Skylark 75-76, and Ventura 75-76. Now the roof and rear of the car makes a big difference because of the fact that there were 4 styles of them. The 2dr hatchback, 2dr sedan w/ formal windows, 2dr sedan w/o formal windows, and a 4dr. Help?|||The ignition system looks for resistance factor form the key. If it does not see that resistance the car will not start. It is not just a simply cut this wire and splice it together with other. The system is designed to stop your car from being stolen if it was that simple then it would not be of any use would it. Cheap trick you can try is to get a key punched out at the dealer. Do not just get your key copied this will do nothing as the key wears it will not push the tumbler in the ign cylinder fully cause an incorrect reading. What thermostat to use for Oldsmobile Cutlass - 1982?

The engine in V6 3.8L.

I need to replace the thermostat but I notice that there are 3 type of them : 160,180 and 195潞.

How should I decide what is the best for my engine ?

Thanks|||i would run the stock size. you would have to take it out to see what one you have. remember that just because you put a colder thermostat in your car does not mean it will run cooler. it can but it can also make it run hotter. all configurations are different. a colder thermostat will allow the water to flow more often between the radiator and the engine. this in some cars will make it run hotter because the water is in the radiator for less time not allowing it to cool down enough before returning to the engine. being a 82 olds you probably will not notice a difference with all 3 thermostats. this car only has a 2 core but is large enough which ever one you use.|||really ive always ran 195 but really you can look at old one and pick same thing 180 woul dbe ok also i wouldnt use the lowest|||decide what's best for the area you live in, if you live in a very hot climate choose the lowest, if its very cold in your area, choose the highest. if its in between then, you know which one....|||Stock should be 195. Where is the neutral safety switch on 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera?

1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

3.3L V6

And would a bad neutral safety switch cause the

car to not even click when trying to start it

but allow all lights and radio to work?

Just like a second opinion.

(Don't like to throw parts at cars and expect them to run)|||OK Dale,

On the side of the transmission, where the cable from the shift lever attaches, there should be a box with 6 - 10 wire plug attached to it. Thats the Manual Lever Position Sensor, or also called the neutral safety switch (in a manual transmission)

Did you check the reverse lights%26gt; if theyre not coming on then likely the power to the swich is interrupted. it uses the same circuit to power the start solenoid.

There are twosmall screws that can be released, and then rotate the switch forward or back to get contact for starting.

The MLPS ONLY interrupts signal to the starter when the trans in in a motion gear, AND signals backup lights to be on when in reverse (So the car wont start while in gear, causing unexpected movement of the vehicle. the other accessories are unaffected like radio and lights

My 1980 oldsmobile cutlass supreme dies when i put it in gear.?

I have a automatic 1980 oldsmobile cutlass supreme, it idles fine and runs great at highway speeds. The problem only occurs at low speeds. It starts up and idles fine, but once i put it in gear it will die unless i give it a lot of gas, change to drive, give it more gas and when i come to a stop i have to put it in neutral and rev it a little to keep it running. I think it might be something with the vacuum but i am not sure.|||those engines are known for intake vacum leaks and water leaks. spray water around the intake area next to the valve covers and forunt and back of the engine if the engine speeds up there is a vaccum leak. if there is no change check the egr valve

In most installations, vacuum to the EGR valve is controlled by a Thermal Vacuum Switch (TVS); the switch, which is installed into the engine block, shuts off vacuum to the EGR valve until the engine is hot. This prevents the stalling and bumpy idle which would result if EGR occurred when the engine was cold.

On 1979 and later models have a ported signal vacuum EGR valve. The valve opening is controlled by the amount of vacuum obtained from a ported vacuum source on the carburetor and the amount of backpressure in the exhaust system.

To test the EGR valve operation, place a mirror under the valve to see if the valve moves when the throttle is opened. If the diaphragm does not move, there is either a problem with vacuum or the valve is stuck. With the valve stuck open, the engine will run very rough at idle or may not even start. If it is stuck closed, you would likely experience severe pinging when the engine is under load or on acceleration. With a vacuum gauge hooked up at the EGR vacuum line, you should see vacuum on the gauge when the throttle is opened. To find out if the exhaust gas is actually recirculating, use a hand vacuum pump to open the EGR valve with the engine idling. If the engine runs rough or stalls, the exhaust gas is recirculating. If it does not, remove the EGR valve and clean it, as well as the EGR ports in the intake manifold. When testing with a hand vacuum pump, EGR valves should hold a steady vacuum and not leak. Apply vacuum to vacuum port. The valve should be fully open at 10.5 in. Hg (72 kPa) and closed below 6 in. Hg (41 kPa) on 1984 and earlier models. On 1985 models, the valve should be wide open at 21 in. Hg (144 kPa) and closed below 6 in. Hg. (41 kPa) If the valve does leak, it must be replaced.|||the idle needs to be done while car is in gear ...with two people naturally|||vaccum/carburater...and the fact its an oldsmobile|||my favorite all time car sell it to me|||You may want to check your TCC solenoid in the transmission. You can do that by unplugging the connector on the front side of the transmission and put it in gear and see if it dies. Your TCC locks-up the torque converter so you get better MPG's, but if it's lock up when you stop it wont let the engine spin when the car stops.

How long will my '98 Oldsmobile Intrigue run for?

I'm buying a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue tomorrow and it has 135,759 miles on it and the guy (dealer) said it just needs new tires. Do you think it will still be running good before it gets to 150k?|||As long as the dealer says it has passed your State inspection and he guarantees you'll be able to get it registered in your State, I would predict that the automatic transmission would fail first if the car has received at least the recommended GM maintenance schedule found in your owner's manual throughout it's lifetime. Don't forget to test the electricals like the rear window defroster element (often burned out) etc. Has it passed the State emission's test too?

If it has a "timing belt" that can break (rather than a steel "timing chain"), check to see if it has an "interference" engine whose valves hit the pistons when the timing belt breaks. If it does and the belt breaks, then that might send your car to the happy hunting ground in car heaven before the transmission fails.

Is it possible to replace the braking unit (ABS/ Master cylinder unit) on the 1988 Olds 98 Touring Sedan with a different Oldsmobile braking unit without the ABS?|||Yes, but why, if your ABS has failed, it will still operate as a standard braking system|||Anything is possible. But why would you want to disable a safety system like antilock brakes? If you are just trying to save money, you won't. It will cost more to make a conversion (correctly) than it would to buy the correct master cylinder.

Can I put a new stereo system in a year 2000 Oldsmobile intrigue?

I am getting my license soon and I'll be driving my sisters oldsmobile intrigue since she got a used acura. Could I get a new stereo system to put in there? or is it proprietary system?|||You can put a new head unit, speakers, subs, anything at all in any automobile. It's just a matter of getting the right parts and knowing how to wire it.|||yea you will just have to figure out what fits and what doesnt.

Why does a Pontiac and an Oldsmobile with the same engine not get close to the same MPG?

The Oldsmobile Intrigue gets almost a third more MPG than the Pontiac Grand Prix. Both have the same engine and with the same driver, there is a vast difference in the performance--why?|||Perhaps the transmission is geared differently (final drive ratio) A car with a High final drive (Low numerically) will have better milage, higher top speed, but less git-up-and-go (think NASCAR). A Low final drive (High Numerically) Will have quick accelaration but lower top speed and milege(Think DRAGRACER).|||The varied pkgs " as installed" including gear ratio(s) hp/ torque/ method and type of fuel - carb setup metering valves float and jet setup or fuel injectionspecs computer settings etc.., engine specs like cam duration- lift, pistons, valves and valve train, body weight of vehicles/ age/ overall power train condition.. tire type and rubber compound used. These are not all but some of the factors in *WHY|||The same engine size and same driver are only two factors that can change MPG.

Assuming that both vehicles are driven the same route at the same time would be the only way to accurately get the same mileage, unless the vehicles are driven onn a closed course where other driving conditions are static, such as road congestion and variable stop signal timings.

Another consideration is the gross vehicle weight and actual vehicle weight. A difference of 100 pounds can be enough to vary the rating five to ten percent. Energy to drag the extra weight

The vehicle suspension alignment can effect mileage by inducing drag on the drive components on the misaligned vehicle. More energy - more gas - must be applied to overcome wheels that are not running straight and true.

The body design an style can greatly change fuel mileage. Take a look at motor racing. The race car teams have found out that adding just a thin layer of tape over slope edges or and additional pound of air pressure in one tire of the car can drastically change a car's performance, fuel mileage, endurance and handling.|||Grand Prix is heavier than a Intrigue. Plus gearing of transmission.

Weight and gearing is the difference. The engine works harder in the Grand Prix due to more mass to move where the Intrigue is lighter.|||Those cars dont have the same engine. The mileage is pretty close. Both are used so they both may need a tune up since you claim 1 gets almost 10 mpg more than the other. Different drivers and different driving situations will change your results too.

2002 Olds - 3.5 V6 DOHC, 215 hp, 230 ft-lbs, 3,434 lbs, 20 mpg city %26amp; 30 hwy

2002 GP GTP - 3.8 V6 OHV SC, 240 hp, 280 ft-lbs, 3,559 lbs, 18 mpg city %26amp; 28 hwy

2002 GP GT - 3.8 V6 OHV, 200 hp, 225 ft-lbs, 3,496 lbs, 19 mpg city %26amp; 29 hwy

2002 GP SE - 3.1 V6 OHV, 175 hp, 195 ft-lbs, 3,384 lbs, 20 mpg city %26amp; 29 hwy|||because olds is more of a luxury car so it does not need to have as much power as the Pontiac also did you check and see if the Pontiac has a supercharged engine this makes a difference in fuel economy. I don't think that Oldsmobile had the supercharged 3800 engine available in their lineup.

Why is my friends 93 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera dying?

My friend has a 93 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera that is dying for no apparent reason. The car will run fine for about 20-30 minutes and then just stall out. If you wait about 10 minutes, it will start back up just fine and run for another 20-30 minutes before doing the same thing over again. I've replaced all the ignition coils and the ignition control module which seems to have given the car a little bit more run time before it stalls. Any ideas?|||crank sensors go bad on those commonly.

What speakers will fit a Oldsmobile Alero 2001?

What speakers will fit a Oldsmobile Alero 2001, or where can I find them? Right now it has Delco model # 09386529. Also, How do you access the old speakers to get them out? Is it a matter of just plugin the new ones in? |||The front speakers are 4x6 and require you to remote the door panel to get access to them. The rear speakers are 6x9 and require you to remove the rear deck to gain access. As far as plugging in the new ones, you'll need to purchase speaker harness to just plug and play. Otherwise you'd have to splice into the factory wiring.

Where is the mileage data stored in a '94 Oldsmobile Bravada? The instrument cluster or somewhere else?

I was sold a '94 Bravada recently. The seller told me that the instrument cluster had been recently changed. I asked if this had modified the mileage. He said, "no," that data is not stored in the cluster. A friend who owns a '94 GMC Jimmy (pretty much same car as I understand) thinks that his mileage was modified though when he replaced his digital cluster.

Who is right? Will replacing the cluster on a '94 Oldsmobile Bravada modify the mileage?|||My research indicates that it is stored in non-volatile RAM chip in the instrument cluster. If the seller was able to find an instrument cluster with a lower mileage, that may be the reason it was replaced. You cannot pulse the odometer input to decrease the mileage. You can pulse the input to INCREASE the mileage. When you get to 999,999 miles, the data is latched - it does not roll over to 000,000 so you can't reset the mileage to a lower value unless you replace the instrument cluster.

I would look at the title to the vehicle AND the registration history to see if the mileage increased during each registration.|||I believe the mileage is stored in the main computer and possibly also in a chip inside the instrument cluster.

How much does it cost to replace an alero oldsmobile fuel pump?

i need to replace my fuel pump in my 2003 alero, oldsmobile. i had a guy come look at it and he said its the fuel pump, how much will i need to pay to get a new one and where do i go to buy it?|||the part costs around $200.... they aren't cheap. The labor is probably going to run 4-6 hours, which most shops charge around 80-110 an hour for... It's not a cheap fix, unless you know a mechanic.|||You did not mention the engine option in your Alero the 2.2L 4cylinder or the 3.4L V-6? The Alero is an easy pump to replace, the labor only calls for 1.8 hours to replace it (less than $200.00) and the fuel pump (fuel pump module) list for $243.99 http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/A鈥?/a> (it will be under $500.00)

Where and how do I put refrigerant into an Oldsmobile tornada 90 ?

Where and how do I put refrigerant into an Oldsmobile tornada 90 ?|||Have a AC shop do it. If you don,t know where to put it in, you probably don't have any proper tools. The system would need to be pumped down and rescue the old refrigerant, system lubricated, checked for leaks, all before trying to recharge it. The gauges for this will cost as much as a normal service.|||i have a 1988 olds.delta 88 and i had mine recharged last summer and yours is probably the same as mine.on the passenger side, back by the firewall, theres a tank and a valve on it.get yourself a ac refill kit and screw the hose on the can and on the valve, now turn the little valve on the hose, and it will go into the tank.thats how a friend did mine.|||If you do not know the answer to this question, you absolutely must not do it. Anyway, if the vehicle has no sticker indicating that it has been retrofitted to the new R-134a, then your car takes R-12, which is now illegal for anyone to buy unless you are a professional automotive technician. Plus, there is probably a leak that has caused this problem, and if this is not corrected, it is most likely that this ozone depleting freon will dissipate into the atmosphere as quickly as you put it into the system.|||If we are talking about the AC, then you will find a fitting on the low pressure line. That will be the bigger of the two hoses for the AC. If you buy a recharging kit, it will have the right connectors and a pressure gauge along with the 134A refrigerant.|||for the older vehicles you have to get a kit to recharge it with the new stuff it will have the instructions with the kit i did that to my 93 gmc i think the kit is called retrofit?, anyway if you get the hole kit it should come with the adapters that just screw on to the old fittings, a hose, and the refrigerant and lube for the compressor. i got mine from napa but most common auto parts stores should have it.|||i own a repair shop, and it always goes in by the tank side on it or the nearest one to the back, you can retro fit this to use 134 -a ,and it will cool it just as good, and its lot cheaper also and easier than using r-12,,but that's where it goes in at,good luck i hope this helps.

Where can I get aluminum valve covers with "Oldsmobile" on them in script lettering for a 350 engine? How much

I cant find them anywhere with the old school "Oldsmobile" writing on them. I could spend $150 or maybe a little more.|||did ya check out "e-bay" ???|||You don't mention the year or the type of script. These are steel, but can be chromed if you want them shiny.

Can someone give me the specs for a starter for my 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme?

I am trying to find a free online repair manual for my 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme. Or anyone who can give me the specs for the shims to the starter!|||check with the people at Autozone - they should be able to help or guide you to a manual. The specs for this car should also be the same for many GM cars of that same year and engine.|||There are no specs for adding shims. You add the same amount of shims that you removed. If the starter makes a noise you add or remove shims until the starter sounds normal. It gets a little tedious but that's the way its done. Ive done this many many times in the shop.

you can also go to www.autozone.com, they have free on-line repair manuals

My oldsmobile CS is making a very loud rumbling noise loud enough to where it hurts my ears?

My car sounds OK when I start it but as I drive it, there is a very loud low rumbling noise. It's so loud that I can't drive with the window open because it hurts my ears. It's that loud. Is it a muffler problem or a transmission problem. I'm concerned about the cost to fix it. I haven't had the best of luck finding a good and honest mechanic with previous cars. My car is 1993 Oldsmobile CS.|||It could also be either constant velocity joints if front wheel drive or regular universal joint problem with real wheel drive.

Should i get a 2001 Oldsmobile aurora or a 2003 Pontiac grand prix?

I'm looking into buying a used car. My two main options are a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora, that has less miles and is in better shape mechanical wise, or a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix, which is a little more beat up, but still fully loaded. It really comes down to negotiating with the seller about either. Whats your opinion on either car?|||I would get the Oldsmobile, as it has lower miles, but the head gaskets will need to be replaced, as it is a Northstar engine. The Pontiac has the Buick V6 engine which is very proven.|||I wouldn't buy either .... go find a Chrysler 300 then you have a car

Is the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero GLS V6 Sedan a good car to buy?

I would like to know about the Oldsmobile Alero GLS and anyone who can share their stories. Also, since the Oldsmobile is now obsolete and the value has decreased, would the value increase down the line being considered as a collector's item? Is this car worth buying. Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.|||That is a decent small sedan, and because it's nearly identical to the Pontiac Grand Am, there are plenty of parts available for it. Check the pricing at edmunds.com to make sure you don't overpay, and (as always) get a carfax report AND have a mechanic look it over prior to purchase.

As for it ever being collectible - it will not have any real collectible value in your lifetime - sedans generally don't do well anyway, and that was a high volume generic car (there is nothing special about it), so just consider it basic transportation.

What is the MPG for a 2000 GMC Jimmy or a 1998 Jeep, or an Oldsmobile?

I am on the look out for finding a cheap small SUV and have been looking at different dealerships. Some models I have been looking at are around years from 1998- 2000. Some of the models are GMC JImmy, Chevrelot Blazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Jeep Cherokee, and some Nissans

I have an 1997 Oldsmobile LSS and the Hood release is broken. Is there an alternative way to open the hood? Please help!|||Nope not really. You need to find that wire that has broken and try and repair it or even just pull on it with pliers. If not then your going to have to take it into a shop.

What kind of motor mounts work on a 403 oldsmobile small block?

i am putting a 403 small block in my 69 chevy truck. what kinda of mounts can i use? the original frame mounts from the oldsmobile? can i use those and bolt them to the cross member of the truck?|||If you're lucky, you may be able to use the mounts from the diesel early trucks with that 350 olds based diesel. I'd leave it chevy powered, much cheaper.|||yes you better tie that bad boy down to something you need to get the engine and tranny in position on a crane, and make sure everything is going to line up, you may have to do some fabrication but that's part of the fun, you don't want the engine too high or too close to the radiator, so if you need to make a template to make a spacer for example use cardboard it might bolt in their just fine using the olds motor mounts, try it and see, that's one of the deals with motor swaps, good luck

Where can I find a 1998 Oldsmobile 3800 Series 2 engine?

I need a 98 Oldsmobile 3800 Series 2 engine for a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue.

Where would I be able to get one of these and how much would it be?|||Not that this helps the answer but it is a shame GM has produced their final 3800 motor (Series 3) on August 22nd, 2008. One can hope that the 3.5L that they are replacing it with is just as reliable.|||3800 Series 2 engine GREAT MOTOR junk yard 300.00 all 3800 GM will fit

Where would my air conditioning button on my Oldsmobile Intrigue be?

I have an Oldsmobile Intrigue 2001, and I have no idea how to turn on the A/C. No, there is not a little snowflake button or anything like that. The only thing that may be the right button, but is not, is the Econ button. Lord knows what that does. So, if you would know, it'd be great. Thanks.|||Find your owner's manual or get one and you can answer that question plus your Econ question.

I am looking at 2 vans a 2000 dodge caravan and a 2001 oldsmobile silhouette which one is more reliable? About how much would it cost to completely replace the brakes on a 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass GL?

Either all the lines from the master cylinder back, Or Just the shoes and rotors?

1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass 3.1 v6 4 door|||it all depends if you have know how to do it your self, and how much your going to change. and the most important question i would ask is WHY? did you take it to a garage and they told your you need all this work done? i don't believe in my 30 years of wrenching on cars, trucks and railroad equipment have i ever had to go to such severe measures for a brake issue.

Get a second opinion.|||about 300|||That question's really a little too loaded to just speculate on possible answers. Brakes can be kind of complicated, and repairs can be too. I suggest taking the car to a brake specialty shop such as Budget, or Maxi, and get an estimate. They might charge a few bucks, but It'll be worth it

in the end.|||it would probably cost around 3-500 really easy ,and then the price could go higher depending on if they found any bad lines on it that needed replacing, brake work if done right can be really expensive to do,not all shops are really equipped to do professional brake work, good luck on it.

What is wrong with my car 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora?

The car ran out of gas and stalled. We put gas in it and it still wouldn't start. We put starting fluid in it and it started but it wouldn't stay running. We also put oil in it. It is a 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora.|||It could be that the fuel pump has gone bad, or you may just need to add fuel and then cycle the fuel pump several times to get the fuel into the system.

Be sure you have at least 2 gallons of fuel in the vehicle (more if you are not on level ground)

Turn the ignition key to the run position (do not engage the starter)

Count to 10

Turn the key off

Count to ten

Repeat three times

Turn the key and try to start the car.

If it still does not start, most likely you will need to replace the fuel pump.|||It is possible that the fuel pump is bad. It may have been weak and when you ran it out of fuel that was the straw that broke the camels back. When you turn on the key to the run position can you hear the pump working? Check your fuel filter to make sure it is not clogged. Since I am not sure what kind of maintenance has been done it is a stab in the dark. We know it is not an ignition failure you used starting fluid and it ran although short. Basically you have a fuel supply failure. Check you circuits, filter, lastly fuel pump in that order. You will find the culprit.|||Check your owner's manual to see if your car has a fuel pump cut-off switch often located behind the sidewall carpeting in the trunk. If you find one, push the red button to reset it. Make sure you don't have an anti-theft security lamp flashing on your dash (see your owner's manual). The fuel filter should be replaced. It may be full of water and sediment pumped up from the bottom of the tank.

bboyrughbrn@yahoo.com|||Since you had run the car out of fuel, it had gotten air trapped in the fuel line. If the car has a return-less fuel line...basically no return line to the tank. Then you may have to purge the fuel rail to get the air out, and allow fuel to get in there. Usually done on the service port on the fuel rail

Why is there not a category for Oldsmobile in the car makes categories.?

I have some on my altima and when they are spinning you can barely tell the differece.|||Just make sure it's completely clean and polished. That will cost nest to nothing. Where can i buy a transmission for a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme with a 350 engine?

i want to buy a transmission for my 1987 oldsmobile cutlass because when i reverse it takes a while to kick in reverse.is it worth buying a transmission or just taking it to a mechanic to rebuild it?|||Hm, well if you know how to install a transmission, you could check out the auto wreckers and grab yourself a tranny, and you and your friends could install it.

if you don't know much about it, i suggest just taking it to a mechanic.

But it sounds like you don't need a new transmission, your old one probably just needs an adjustment.|||Rebuild would probably be cheaper than buying a new one and paying to have it dropped in. The key word being 'probably'. But if it's not, or you just want a new tranny period, then check to see if you live near a Pull-A-Part. You have to get the parts off the car yourself, but it's damn cheap (under 100$ for tranny I believe). If there's not one near you, then try craigslist.

Can anyone help?|||On the valve cover you will find the oil fill and another cap with a hose connected to it. You pvc valve is located there.|||There are a couple of places it could be based on which motor you have in it. on some of the GM's, it is right in front, sticking out of the valve cover, near the oil cap (that should be for most 3.1L %26amp; 3.4L engines) . If your engine has a plastic cover on it (usually the 3.8L %26amp; some 3.4L motors), there is a wire harness sticking up, on the passenger side of the motor, push down (gently) on the wire harness %26amp; twist. The PCV valve is inside. Be careful, because it's pretty easy to break that plastic wire harness, %26amp; there's an o-ring that you need to make sure gets put on the new PCV). The other place it could be is on the back side of the engine. On some GM's, there is a hose sticking out of the passenger side of the valve cover that has a plastic ring in the valve cover. The hose leads towards the firewall. You have to unscrew the plastic ring %26amp; the PCV is in there. Be careful, you can break the plastic ring.

Does this help any?

Can someone please tell me what needs to be fixed in my 1992 oldsmobile achieva?

I have a 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva. It has a 4 quad engine. Recently it began acting up on me. When I drive, sometimes the engine light will come on, the spedometer will , by itself , go all the way up as far as it goes and the car will either try to accelerate on it's own or it will stall.

Normally it will do this for awhile then it will begin acting normal again. Well, the other day it began to do this and all of a sudden I hit the brakes and the pedal went all the way to the floor! Now there are no brakes on the car at all. There is some kind of fluid leaking from behind the tire, which I am assuming is brake fluid.

Up until this happend, I have had no brake problems, nor any indication of a brake problem.

Does someone have any idea what this could be? and how expensive it will be to fix?|||Well the first thing is the computer, with the older GM's the computer board would crack and cause problems like you were describing: speedo goes erratic, engine stumble or stall, check engine light comes on and off or a combination of these and other symptoms. You will need to replace the computer and check the ECM connectors and wiring for damage. The brake problem is a leak, likely a brake line or hose that broke when you pushed the pedal down.|||Sounds like you have a couple problems. Being that the car is 15 years old you will tend to get more problems. Yes, its sounds like you have a leak in a brake cylinder or line near the one tire. Also, you have got some kind of serious eletrical problem. Hard to say exactly without seeing it myself. If the engine light came on, there will be a record in the onboard computer, so you can have a mechanic plug it in and see what it says. Might be the main computer that's bad. Might be the cruise control thats shorted. Might be a number of other things. If it accelerates on its own, its dangerous to drive. I would get it checked out by a qualified mechanic before you drive it again. I hate to say it, but it doesn't sound like a cheap fix to me.|||The vehicle is 15 years old, 5 years past its normal life span. The fix may be more than it would be worth once fixed. The brake problem seems to be a wheel cylinder, and not related to your other problems.

Can anyone tell me what vehicle an engine out of a 98 oldsmobile cutlass will interchange into?

I have a good engine out of a 98 oldsmobile cutlass I would like to interchange into another vehicle without having to do any modifications. I need to know what vehicle I can do this with.|||Most GM vehicle.

What kind of turbo kit could i hook up to a 96 oldsmobile lss?

i'm lookin to find out which turbo i can sinc with my 96 oldsmobile lss which has a 3.8L motor (non supercharged) please help!!! is it the Garrett?|||Why do you want to turbo a grocery getter?|||A far better option would be to find a wrecked GM W-Body get a complete 3.8L supercharged V6 and transaxle. The swap should be doable. You'll end up with a transmission that was built to handle the extra torque of a supercharged engine.|||ARE YOU CRASY IF YOU HOOK UP SOMETHING THAT IS THAT EXSPENSIVE TO A CRAPPY CAR LIKE THAT I SUGGEST YOU SAVE UP AND BUY A CAR THAT CAN HANDLE A SUPER CHARGER!

Whats the easiest way to remove a steering column on a 1990 oldsmobile?

well the steering wheel column on my 1990 oldsmobile ninety eight is very loose and was told by this mechanic guy that i needed to replace the steering column (im assuming all the way to rack pinion) so i was wondering how do i remove this the best easiest way, because im planning on going to the pick n pull and get it from there.......some tips and pointers.....or suggestion will help a lot|||It's not has bad has you might thank . You will have one bolt threw the steering knuckle that slides over the steering shaft, which is located under the hood ,now remove the lower panel that's below the steering column,un plug the wiring harness for the column ,check to see if there's any screw at the bottom of the steering column that holds the rubber boot on,now remove the four nuts that holds the steering column up. should be ready to come out.|||The bottom is easy, because there is just a pinch bolt on the clamp to the rack shaft, and a small bolt on the column.

But the top has 4 shear bolts that have to come out of under the dash.

The best way I know how to do that is not with a drill, but by knocking then around in a circle, unscrewing them as you go, with a hammer and chisel. You are not trying to cut off any of the metal, but just trying to get a bite into the remaining rounded shoulder of the bolt.

What power steering pump bracket will interchange with a 1968-1972 350 oldsmobile engine?

I bought a 1968-1972 350 oldsmobile engine. It has no power steering pump brackets. I can't find any anywhere no junk yards autoparts stores. What brackets will interchange with this block? I will buy a new power steering pump but I don't know what year brackets will bolt up to the engine block. Thanks for all your help in my last questions. Does any one have a picture of what the bracket will look like?|||So did this thing have power steering originally? If everything has been disconnected, there's probably some nasty crap in the steering actuator. You should flush it.

I would think almost any GM from 68-72 with a small block would have the same brackets.|||What is your location there big dan. I am in Alberta Can. and can get them for you . Are you interested

What are the specs for 71 oldsmobile 455 cu in engine?

I have an 71 oldsmobile cutlass sx with a 455 cu in engine. I would like to know how much horsepower is estimated at the crank not the rated 320 or so. and the specs on the heads cc,camshaft size etc. Im curious of this engine and would like to know what it's capable of. Thanks|||That's a pretty rare car!

You know the hp rating is in gross, not net, right? If it was a '72, it probably would be rated at 250 hp, as the 4-4-2's "regular" 455 was rated at 270 net and the W-30 at 300 net.

I have the dealer book - not brochure - that has all the stats on the 1971 Oldsmobiles, so shoot me an email and I'll try to give you what you seek; I'm at work so I can't give you what you need. However, you also have this resource, although I can't vouch for its accuracy:

How much is it to change transmission oil on a 2001 oldsmobile alero?

i've never changed the transmission oil on my 2001 oldsmobile alero. how much would it cost?

in fact, i don't even know if my alero has a transmission...i say this cuz when i read the manual...to find it, it just talks about the transaxle..whatever that is.|||All cars need service--go to the dealer and discuss what it needs--mileage and time will dictate what you need done. All mechanics charge about 45 an hour--the guide book on repair states the time allowed for such work. 2 hours is 90 and parts--new gaskets, etc.---good luck|||The transaxle is your transmission. I believe you have a front wheel drive car, right? never changed oil in a transaxle, but I bet its pretty similar to changing oil in a transmission.|||If you are willing to get a little dirty and have some fun, i would suggest attempting the job yourself.

Just make sure that you have something to hold the car up like jack stands. DO NOT RELY ON A JACK ALONE. And have something to catch the fluid in!

The original transmission pan gasket on this car is REUSABLE, try not to damage it during removal.

Firstly, get a transmission filter kit, Pioneer filters no. 745158, usually in stock at your local O'Reilly Auto Parts store for arround $15 and get yourself approx 10Qts of transmission fluid normally around $2.50 per Qt.(Dexron-III i believe, but check with you local GM dealer first)

Secondly, get under the car check to see if there is drain bolt on the transmission, if there is, GREAT. If not, start to loosen all the pan bolts. Try to do this in a manner which will allow one corner of the pan to drop lower to allow the fluid flow into a suitable container. Once you have got covered in fluid and got the pan off, remove the filter screen. (I think it only has one screw holding it in place) Put the new screen in place and secure it. Clean the original gasket and the surfaces the gasket connects with. Also, clean out any sediment that is in the bottom of the pan.

Reattach the pan making sure all the bolts are tightened up equally.

Once all back together, lower the car and open the hood and remove the transmission dip stick. get a funnel and pour 4 Qts of transmisson fluid down the the dip stick tube.

start the engine and holding the car on the brake, work through all the gears pausing for a few seconds in each gear. Take the car for a quick drive around the block a couple of times to warm up the transmission.

when the transmission is warm, check the transmission fluid level and add more if needed.|||This Job use to cost about $39 and now costs around $79 To change the fluid and filter. It's called a trans axle because the engine and the transmission are built together.Front wheel drive.Do yourself a favor and get the job done at a auto lube place or dealership because it's been my experience that most transmission shops will rip you off.Once you go to a transmission shop I'll bet you'll be going back again for some more repairs that are gonna cost you hundreds|||do it yourself for about 25 bucks|||Yes, I will second that about the tranny shop screwin you over, like Chic-Chicdaddy mentioned.

How much is 1999 Oldsmobile Alero worth with a spun rod bearing?

I am trying to sell my 1999 Oldsmobile Alero for $750.00---I spun a rod bearing back in March after putting 2grand worth of parts and labor into it ( new tires/ new water pump/ new timing chain/ wheel bearing/ struts/ and some other things ) I for sure want to get back what I paid for the tires.

i dont think youll get 500 bucks for it, but i would put an ad on craigslist

PARTING OUT 1999 OLDSMOBILE ALERO

and put taking offers on parts, spun a rod bearing and cant sell as whole

youll get way more money that way. prob about 1-2k for this car and sell what you cant sell as scrap metal

i dont know if your mechanically inclined/can take off parts but if you can do it yourself

if you cant let people take the parts they need and charge a bit less than what their worth for their labor|||well you might get that much but with a spun bearing your looking maybe at another crank so some people don,t want to pay that much and have to put a crank in it too. if that,s how much you want then go higher like 800 or 850. that way after they get done trying to get you down then you will get 750 what you want.|||Since it has rod issues, I seriously doubt you'll get $500.00 for it. The rest of the car would have to be immaculate %26amp; I mean no rust, dents on body, no hail, no damage whatsoever to get $750.00 %26amp; even then your still pushing since for one, its an Oldsmobile %26amp; most people look at it as a dead make %26amp; 2 it has engine damage which most likely will need engine swapped out|||Accept a best offer from a wrecking yard probley about $300.00 or sell or car as parts. It's only worth to ever is willing to make a offer, for their price.|||Depends on the current value of scrap metal.|||$750 is fair.

How do I find out the year of my oldsmobile 260 engine?

I have an Oldsmobile 260 Engine in My 1986 Regal. I need to find out what year it is. I have the vin number to the engine which is 557751-2B. Is there a website where I can find this out? Or can someone give me a source where I can find this answer?? Your help is greatly appreciated, Thank you.|||The 4.3 260 was used in the late 70's. Not sure why someone would put one in a car that late. The factory V8 option for that car would have been the 5.0 307 which was also an Olds so the 260 would in theory be a bolt in swap. I think the 260's used the 4bbl intake with the 'dual jet' carbs which were quadrajet bodies with the secondaries blocked out. The 307's had the computer controlled q jets.|||There is a casting date on the back of the engine where the transmission bolts on. ALL GM engines have a foundry casting date somewhere on the block . If your car is a 1986 it could have a 1985 casting date but obviously not a 1987 date. Hope this helps

Where is the thermostat located on a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue?

I'm just wondering if anyone knows where it's located because I can't seem to find it. Your engine is one of those with the thermostat located in the water inlet housing where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine. What you are describing is the "daytime running lights" which can only be turned off by setting the park brake as you describe. We need to get a pull trailer for some minor stuff and need to know how much weight can it pull without ruining the engine. Also what size should I get for the trailer? I looked on-line and cant find anything.|||Your concern should not be ruining the engine, but the transmission. Most full size front wheels drive cars had a recommended towing capacity of about 2000 lbs (1 ton) total weight of trailer. Be sure to leave your transmission in 3rd gear (or little D on the older gm cars) when pulling a trailer. pulling trailers puts a lot of stress on transmissions.

Those guys can measure every single detail of your engine and its performance. If you just want to check compression buy a compression tester gauge from your local auto part store. All you do is unhook the ingnition/coil(so it doesn't actually start) and replace a spark plug with the tester and turn over the engine. The gauge will measure compression of that cylinder. Repeat on the seven remaining cylinders and you have it!! All cylinders should be close to the same. I can't tell you what the comp. should be because you didn't give enough info on the motor!! eg. year/big or small block.|||You can do as the first guy said, that may be a lot of trouble, but may be worth doing.

What I would suggest is do a good visual inspection first, for areas of leakage and such, check the spark plug condition, knock out a freeze plug and check for crud in the block and such. Then do a compression test with a gauge. You can either hook up a starter to the engine, or turn it with a wrench. Either way will give you a good idea of the compression. Remember, you will be looking for even readings, not neccesarily high readings.

To prep the motor for installing you would be wise to pull the valve covers and oil pan to check for sludge build up. Pull a couple of bearing caps and see hoe the crank main and rod journals look. While open you can actually pressure wash the crud out if needed. You can also inspect/replace the oil pump and clean the pickup screen. You should also replace both front and rear main seals, and I would also advis replacing the water pump, thermostat, and intake gasket. It wouldn't hurt to also replace the front cover gasket (timing chain) and also inspect the chain and replace if needed.

I know that sounds like a lot of work, but it should cost less than a hundred bucks, and take no more tha a few hours to do. You will at least then have a good idea of the engines shape, and will have insured that it won't have any leaks.

Or you could just put it in a car and hope for the best!

My 91 oldsmobile cutlass supreme is a 3.1 v6 and only gets 10 miles to the gallon. I changed all 6 spark plugs and wires, changed the fuel filter, and straight piped the catty. They say the o2 sensor is fine but I'm not convinced. Any ideas?|||Keep all emision controls stock and hooked up and she should get great gas mileage.|||Could be somethin else wrong with the ignition system. Ignition timing might be off. And yeah, driving habits make a difference but shouldn't make that big of one. I suppose the o2 sensor could be part of the problem. Sounds like it's running rich. If you had to hollow the cat out, you're probably running rich. Could be a clogged vacuum line making you run rich. And "A+", cleaning the cat out inproves your mileage! That emissions crap makes your mileage worse and robs horsepower.|||driving habits also can play a role on that, such as quick acceleration and braking.

How much would a valve job on a 1987 oldsmobile delta cost?

Hi,

I don't know much about cars. Im buying a first car for my 16 year old son. I found a 1987 oldsmobile delta royale with under 130000 miles, but it needs a valve job.

Is this car reliable for its age? How much would the valve job usually cost, is it an expensive job or easy?

thanks|||If the automatic transmission has never been replaced, depending on its service history, you can't expect many more miles on it before it fails unless most of the miles were "highway" miles rather than stop and go local driving. I myself would look for another car. I had a 1988 Bonneville with the 3800 engine. How about a Ford Mustang rear wheel drive instead? It would be easier and cheaper to maintain.|||Unless u r getting it VERY cheap,it will b cost prohibitive,{an example} rebuilt heads are $200-300 each, depending on ur locale %26amp; whether urs r rebuildable r not. Then u have 2 consider installing, new cam %26amp; bearings-lifters-rockers %26amp; pushrods, labor is expensive also.If u go this far it only makes sense to rebuild the bottom half also.

What type of engine did the 1970 and 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass have?

I am looking at buying a 1970 or 1971 oldsmobile cutlass and the current owner says that it has a 350 buick engine in it. I would like to know if that is the correct engine for this make of car.|||I'm sure the 350 was an optional engine for that car|||Yes, but it is an Old's engine, not a Chev.

Where is the fuel pump relay on a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme?

All I need to know is, Where is the fuel pump relay on my 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme?|||/ I hope the search below can help you.

Where is the blower resistor located on a 1999 Oldsmobile 88 ?

I have a 1999 Oldsmobile 88, 3.8L engine, 6 cyl. The blower works fine on the lower 3 settings, but not on the highest setting. People have said it sounds like the blower resistor is bad. Where is this part located? I have searched high and low and cannot find any good description of exactly where it is. Thank you!|||On my 98 Regal the fan motor hangs down under the glove box on the passenger side. The resistor block is just in front of that partially covered by the floor carper. You can follow the wire from the fan motor to it to be sure you have the correct part. I think there is one screw that is sort of hard to get too but otherwise its not too bad other than you have to kneel on the ground outside the car and then twist your body in an odd shape to get in there.|||It's right next to the fan

How do I replace a starter on my 1990 Oldsmobile Ciera?

I'm a fast learner and would try anything once.

My car is a 1990 Oldsmobile Ciera, 6 cycinder.

It needs the starter replaced on it.

How would I go about replacing the starter on my car?|||This is not a fun job. Sometimes the engine has to be lifted to get at the bolts. Best not to do it yourself.|||oipen hood throw in grenade walk away|||go to autozone.com ,its all there.|||I would go get you a chilton's repair manual and follow the procedures. Sometime starters can be a pain depending on the vehicle.|||this is a fairly easy process, but is actually a pain to change. the starter sits right where the font cross member sits. you have to pull the 2 bolts that hold it to the block. remember that one is actually longer than the other one and the shim only goes in one way, and is a must or the starter gear will hit the flywheel and not engage properly and cause damage. as you pull the starter out you have to rotate it towards the front of the car on its bottom across the cross member. pull the two wires on the back. the big nut should be either as 14mm or a 15mm. the small one should be a 7mm or a 6mm.. don't remember. and remeber the first thing you should do is disconnect the battery. it should take about 30 minutes to do this.

and don't remember if one of the bolts stays in the starter when you pull it out or not. its been a few years since i've done one. and i don't think that you can use a ratchet, you have to stick with hand wrenches. not enough space in there.|||go to www.autozone.com. Step by step instructions with photos on lijne.|||They have books on all cars at auto zone and they are so handy, it tells how to fix just about anything, and there not real expensive about 12.00. I got one for my car and it's more then paid for itself.

What is the best way to tow an Oldsmobile Alero?

I need to tow an Oldsmobile Alero about a half mile with a tow rope. Where is the best place on the front of the car to hook up the rope, tow the car, and not damage it?|||What kind of car are you going to use?|||Hook it to the bumper mounts

Does my 1995 oldsmobile 88 need to be realigned after the transmission has been removed and replaced?

I bought a used transmission for my 1995 oldsmobile 88 and paid a guy 250 to remove and replace it. The steering seems slightly different and the steering wheel is not exactly centered. Does one normally have the front end realigned after doing this job?|||The answer to your question is yes! The camber should be checked and also it probably needs a cradle adjustment also because it was removed! ADDED: @ SEERIN, obviously you don't know! Because you don't know that the cradle has to be removed to remove a front wheel drive transmission! And an alignment has nothing to do with a wobble. And also you must not have read the question because the man said that the steering wheel spoke was not centered now! I think that you may need to go to another section of yahoo answers!|||Is it rear wheel drive? Then no.

If its front, No you should not half to because that part isn't something that gets moved, it is generally on the strut, and that doesn't come out either, unless they took it all apart.

Does it pull to a side?

Go real slow, and see if the steering wheel drifts one way or the other, If it does, you should.

Also you may notice going 55 some wobble, if it is bad keep it at a speed the wheel doesn't bounce, and get it aligned.

If it does none of those things, don't worry about it.

If you are extra curious,

There is a small bar that faces the front of the car, look to see if he marked it or if the dirt stain on the threads to where it connects to the "tie rod" end. if you see clean threads it may have not been tightened up enough.|||your gonna need to,he didnt give a crap, and just threw it back together.

Does a 1994 Oldsmobile Achieva have the VIN stamped on the engine block?

We are trying to find out whether a 1994 Oldsmobile Achieva has had a new engine put in, or whether the factory engine is still in it.|||No its not stamped on it. How many miles does it have? I have 245 thousand on my 3.1 in mine. I love that car! They have a serious problem with those darn Plastic intake gaskets, but Felpro makes a steel gasket for them now. Works great!|||The V in VIN stands for vehicle. The engine has its own number.

What parts are swappable between chevy motors and oldsmobile motors?

What parts are swappable between chevy motors and oldsmobile motors i would like to know if i can use the exhuast manifold from an 85 buick regal on a 91 350 chevy motor.|||Chevrolet engine are by themselves, as well as Oldsmobile. that being said some Buick's used the Chev 305 v-8. because of the year differences they are not interchangeable|||It should work..Older Oldsmobiles and Chevys are a better fits..but the Cutlass, Monte Carlo, and Regal shared rhe same platform with a few tweaks here and there for a good 10 years...after 86 or 87...things kind of started to split apart...check out GM Performance parts..they make alot of universial parts.

How do you reset the timing on a crank sensor,on a 1992 oldsmobile cutless ciera?

After a good used part or a brand new crank sensor is replaced on a 1992 oldsmobile cutless ciera, does it need to be reset? If so how is that done?|||just screw it in. Done.|||you don,t set the timing but you do have to make sure the sensor is aligned with the fins on the crank damper or as soon as you hit that switch you can damage the sensor and the damper. just unhook the battery before you start.

Why would Oldsmobile start and run, then stop and not start?

Have a 1986 Oldsmobile. Can start it, drive it, then shut it off. Try to start it again and it won't start. Could it be the fuel pump, or is there a fuel filter? How do you check for the problem? Thank you for any help.|||Sounds like a charging problem to me. Check BOTH ends of the battery cable. Replace them if corrosion has worked it's way up, under the insulation. At this age, it would be a great idea for you just to go ahead and replace them. Realize that your charging system is a 2 way street. When you start a car, power is drawn from the battery to engage the starter motor. After the car starts, the alternator and voltage regulator work together to A) recharge the battery and B) run and the engine and car electronics. Dirty cables act like resistors. They can turn the cables into a toaster if the resistance gets too high. Corrosion is the enemy here. You would be right, however, to change your fuel filter. After all these years, the filtre has probably done it's job. A dirty filter will cause you to lose top end of the vehicle (because the fuel pressure is getting obstructed). Also, the voltage of the battery is diverted partially at start up to activate the fuel pump. If there isn't enough "juice" in the battery, the fuel pump won't be working either. Good Luck!!|||i have a 88 oldsmobile and it could be dirty battery terminals or they are loose. if it was the pump or gas filter then it would,nt run as good the first time. i would be checking out the charging system first like the terminals.

Where is the distributor cap in an Oldsmobile intrigue located?

My car doesn't start when it rains, I hear this is caused by water in the distributor cap. I drive an Oldsmobile intrigue - where is the distributor located and how can I get it dried out?|||I dont think a modern car like that has a distributer cap..

I suspect its the battery. Make sure those connections are good clean and not overly exposed to moisture|||Just follow the Spark Plug wires away from the engine. THey're supposed to connect from the distributor to the spark plugs.|||There's no distributor in the Intrigue, it has what's called a "coil pack", and it's not the problem. You just need to change the spark plug wires. They've gotten old and are absorbing moisture when it rains and shorting out. I recommend you replace the spark plugs at the same time.|||The modern replacement of the distributor is called "coil pack" It's a rectangle type of coil where all your spark plug wires are hooked up.

Maybe that you need to replace your spark plugs and spark plug wires(depends how old they are). If you do clean the the end of the spark plug wires, pull it one at a time and be careful not to mixed them up. Do it slowly and make sure that each wire goes to the right cylinder. Good luck.|||i think your car is like my oldsmobile, it don,t have a cap, it has a coil pack and module.
